Bixi Bikes
Toronto has partnered with the bike company, Bixi, to start public bicycle sharing system in downtown Toronto. The system consists of 1000 bikes at 80 stations. Torontonians can pay $95 a year for a member ship and have a chance to pay at any of the bike stations across the city.
But what do people think about the Bixi bikes?
Andrea- “Good idea as long as no one steals them.”
Anonymous – “Never heard of it, but it sounds like it could be a good idea!”
Krista – “Its bad; there are street cars for getting around.”
Elizabeth – “Great idea!”
Tom – “I don’t know. Its alright, I guess.”
Anonymous – “Actually my brother is using it and loves it; I’m probably going to start too.”
Bixi and Tourism
Bixi bikes has been a big hit in other cities all around the world too. It is in Montreal, Washington, Melbourne, Minneapolis, and also is biggest in London where they have 6000 bikes, and 400 stations. The great price makes it a great alternative for people looking to see downtown Toronto in a new and fun way.
While this may be good for Toronto residents, would tourists find this appealing?
Andrea – “Yah, biking is pretty big right now cause of high gas prices so I’m sure that this would help tourism.”
Mike – “It might have some effect on it, yah. Maybe not in the short term but in the long term.”
Elizabeth – “I’d recommend it for sure. It’s a great fun way to get around.”
Tom – “Tourists would probably like it, as long as it works well.”
Anonymous – “It would be a good way to get around for them and its pretty fun.”
Canadian Government
Canada just had a federal election and to many peoples surprise Prime Minister was able to get his majority Conservative government. Harper says that he will able to get a lot more done for Canada, and improve the country now that its a majority.
Now what do Ontarians think about the new majority government?
Andrea – “Don’t pay much attention to the government but I hear its pretty bad.”
Tom – “I think its great that Harper has a majority and can finally get something done.”
The Canadian Government is not easy to describe, with many people liking Harper and others not. Now that the NDP is the official opposition, Parliament looks very different.
How would someone from Ontario describe it to a tourist?
Andrea -”Our government is pretty indescribable.”
Mike – “I’d describe it as a disorganized conservatives.”
Tom – “I would tell them that it’s a great government with a great leader.”
Jobs
In Canada and in Ontario particularly the unemployment rate has been going down, meaning more people have jobs. Every month, thousands of new jobs are being created.
What are the best jobs to have in Ontario right now?
Andrea – “Anything that is recession proof!”
Anonymous – “I guess something that you could work outside with, cause of the nice weather.”
Tom – “Well I’m an actor, so I think that’s a pretty good job.”
Anonymous – “Best jobs are anything that makes a lot of money.”
