Ontario Hunting

Ontario’s plentiful green and wooded areas make it a haven for hunters. It is an important activity all over the world for people who gather food and make important contributions to conservatism; or for people who want to further friendships and create strong family bonds.

Tourists in Ontario who hope to go hunting should plan well in advance and make sure they have all supporting legal documentation. All Ontario residents and non-residents must have an Ontario Outdoors Card prior to purchasing a hunting licence or licence tag. As well, every hunter needs to read the Hunting Regulations Summary 2010-2011 prior to hunting.

*Please Note: It is illegal to buy, sell or transfer licences.

How Can I Hunt in Ontario?

In Ontario, each gun hunter must pass the Canadian Firearms Safety Course Exam (CFS) and the Ontario Hunter Education Course (OHEC) exam in order to ensure safe recreational activities.

Gun Hunting: Needs the Class H1 Outdoors Card, which can only be acquired after providing proof of passing the OHEC and CFS exams.

Non-gun Hunting: Needs a Class H2 Outdoors Card, which permits all methods of hunting except guns (fishing or archery). The applicant must prove he or she has passed the OHEC exam.

Applicants should also know for what kind of game they are hunting because licences are specific to the type of animal. The current licences are for moose, deer, black bear, wolf and coyote, wild turkey, falconry and migratory game birds.

Ontario has 400,000 square kilometres of a hunter’s paradise. Hunters can indulge a range of climates, environments, and scenery from the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence region to the rocky terrain of the Great Canadian Shield, through the lakes and wilderness of Algonquin Park.

Hunting Ontario Wildlife

Legal hunting does not endanger wildlife and can often play an important role in maintaining the populations of abundant species. In fact, the hunted species are maintained sustainably with careful monitoring and sound science.

These systems of selective harvesting have helped sustain populations of species such as grouse, waterfowl, black bear, deer and moose, to name a few. Recent and careful reintroduction of wild turkey has also come into the mix.
